Model Context Protocol

n8n MCP Server

Workflow Orchestration via Model Context Protocol

Trigger complex workflows from your AI agent. The n8n MCP server bridges the gap between LLM reasoning and multi-step automation sequences.

Engineering and operations teams use n8n MCP to give their AI agents 'hands'—the ability to trigger complex, multi-step workflows that span dozens of services. n8n already connects to 1,000+ apps (Salesforce, HubSpot, AWS, databases). With MCP, your LLM can now decide when and how to run those workflows, passing dynamic parameters and checking results—all through natural language. This turns your AI from a conversationalist into an active operator.

  • Orchestrate complex multi-step automations from a single AI command
  • No need to build custom webhook handlers or API routing
  • Leverage existing n8n workflow library (1,000+ integrations)
  • Full audit trail via n8n's execution history

Real-World Automation

Common Workflows

See how teams combine this MCP with other tools to automate real business processes.

Smart Lead Enrichment

Scenario: A new lead signs up. AI decides they're high-value and triggers a full data enrichment workflow before alerting sales.
Steps:
  1. Firecrawl MCP scrapes their company website for tech stack and size
  2. AI determines 'enterprise prospect' based on criteria
  3. n8n MCP triggers 'enrich_enterprise_lead' workflow
  4. Workflow: Clearbit → LinkedIn → Tech stack detection → Compose summary
  5. HubSpot MCP updates lead record with enriched fields
  6. Slack MCP alerts enterprise sales channel with full dossier
Outcome: Sales reps get fully enriched leads within 4 minutes of signup. Close rate increases 27% due to better context.

Incident Response Automation

Scenario: Monitoring alerts: 'API error rate >5%'. AI decides it's severe and triggers incident response playbook.
Steps:
  1. AI analyzes error logs (via Firecrawl or log DB)
  2. n8n MCP triggers 'P2-incident-response' workflow
  3. Workflow: PagerDuty alert → Create Linear incident → Post to #incidents Slack → Roll back recent deploy
  4. Linear MCP creates investigation task
  5. Post-mortem page created in Notion automatically
Outcome: MTTR (mean time to resolve) drops from 45 minutes to 8 minutes. Manual steps eliminated.

Content Publishing Pipeline

Scenario: Marketing requests: 'Publish blog post to WordPress, LinkedIn, Twitter, and send to email list.' AI coordinates it all.
Steps:
  1. AI pulls draft from Notion database (ready-to-publish)
  2. n8n MCP triggers 'multi-channel-publish' workflow
  3. Workflow: Format for WordPress → publish → generate social snippets → schedule tweets → add to Mailchimp campaign
  4. Linear MCP creates 'track-performance' task for 30 days
  5. Slack MCP confirms: 'Blog live. 3 channels scheduled.'
Outcome: Content distribution that took 2 hours manually now runs in 90 seconds. 100% error-free execution.

Available Tools — In Depth

Detailed reference for each tool exposed by this MCP server, with examples and related use cases.

trigger_workflow

Execute any n8n workflow by its ID, passing JSON data as input parameters. The workflow runs asynchronously—you receive an execution ID to poll for results. Use this to start complex multi-step automations (API calls, data transformation, conditional logic) from a single AI instruction.

Example:""Run workflow 12345 with customer_id='abc' and alert_channel='#sales'. Get execution ID.""
Works great with:list_workflowsget_execution_result

list_workflows

Retrieve all accessible n8n workflows with metadata (ID, name, status, tags). Use this to discover what automations are available before selecting which to trigger. Can filter by active/inactive status.

Example:""List all active workflows with 'sales' in the name, return IDs and descriptions.""
Works great with:trigger_workflowget_execution_result

get_execution_result

Poll the status and output of a workflow execution by execution ID. Returns: status (active/success/error), start/end timestamps, and the final JSON output from the last node. Essential for checking if a triggered workflow completed successfully.

Example:""Check execution ABC123. Did it succeed? What was the final output data?""
Works great with:trigger_workflowlist_workflows
Setup Guide

Configuration & Best Practices

Setup Checklist

  • N8N_URL (required)
    Your n8n instance URL. Cloud: https://your-account.n8n.cloud. Self-hosted: https://your-server.com
  • N8N_API_KEY (required)
Generate in n8n: Settings → API Keys. Create key with 'Workflow: execute' and 'Workflow: read' permissions.
  • Workflow activation
Target workflow must be 'Active' in n8n. Inactive workflows won't trigger.
  • Pass input data
trigger_workflow accepts JSON object—map keys to workflow's 'Webhook' or 'Execute' node input fields.
  • Polling interval
get_execution_result should be called 2-5 seconds after trigger to allow time for completion.

Troubleshooting

404 Workflow not found
Fix: ID incorrect OR API key lacks 'Workflow: read' permission. Verify ID and key scopes in n8n settings.
403 Insufficient permissions
Fix: API key missing execution rights. Edit key in n8n → add 'Workflow: execute' scope.
400 Invalid input data
Fix: JSON structure doesn't match webhook schema. Check workflow's trigger node expects which fields.
Execution failed (webhook response)
Fix: Workflow had an error node. Check n8n's execution logs for the specific failed node and stack trace.
Rate limit: Depends on your n8n plan. Cloud: ~60-120 req/min. Self-hosted: unlimited by your own limits.

When to Use n8n MCP Server vs. Alternatives

Use This MCP When:

  • You need AI-native access via natural language
  • Your workflows span multiple tools (MCP composability)
  • You prefer cloud hosting over local Docker
  • You want zero-config deployment with ClawFast
  • Your use case requires LLMs to reason and act autonomously

Consider Alternatives When:

  • You need bulk data sync (use native export/import)
  • Real-time streaming is critical (use native webhooks)
  • You have strict compliance requiring direct API audit logs
  • Your integration is a one-off script (direct SDK may be simpler)
  • You need features not yet exposed by this MCP server
FAQ

Common Questions About n8n MCP Server

Q: Can I trigger any n8n workflow?
A: Yes, if the workflow is Active and your API key has 'execute' permission on it. Some workflows with manual trigger (button) can't be triggered via API.
Q: How do I know when the workflow is done?
A: Use get_execution_result polling. Check status: 'active' (running), 'success' (complete), 'error'. Execution ID returned immediately by trigger.
Q: What if the workflow takes >30 seconds?
A: n8n Cloud has timeout ~300s. Self-hosted unlimited. Poll get_execution_result every 5-10s until non-active status.
Q: Can I pass data into the workflow?
A: Yes—pass JSON via trigger_workflow's data parameter. Access in workflow via $input.first.json.fieldName.
Q: Do I need n8n Cloud or self-hosted?
A: Both work. Cloud is easier (no infra). Self-hosted gives more control and higher rate limits. MCP connects identically to both.
Q: Are workflow executions logged?
A: Yes, in n8n's Executions tab. You can see input, output, duration, and error logs per run.
Q: Can I trigger workflows conditionally?
A: That's AI's job. The LLM decides based on context whether to call trigger_workflow. You can also add pre-check logic in n8n.
Q: What about concurrent executions?
A: n8n handles queuing. If rate-limited, executions wait. MCP returns immediately—actual workflow runs async.
